What Is Oil Pulling? A Simple Guide
Oil pulling is an old natural practice that has recently become popular again. It involves swishing oil inside your mouth for several minutes to clean the teeth and gums. Many people use coconut oil because it tastes better and has antibacterial benefits.
The idea behind oil pulling is simple: the oil attracts harmful bacteria, toxins, and plaque from your mouth. When you spit out the oil, you remove these unwanted substances as well. This helps improve oral hygiene and may help reduce bad breath.
To practice oil pulling, take one tablespoon of coconut oil and gently swish it inside your mouth. Don’t swallow the oil. Keep swishing for 5–10 minutes if you are a beginner. With time, you can increase the duration to 15 or even 20 minutes.
After you finish, spit the oil into a tissue or a trash bin—not the sink—because oil can harden and clog pipes. Rinse your mouth with warm water, then brush your teeth normally.
Many people say that oil pulling makes their teeth feel cleaner and their breath fresher. Some even report less gum irritation. While it’s not a replacement for brushing or flossing, it can be a helpful addition to your routine.
If you want to try it, start slowly and be consistent. A few minutes every morning can make a noticeable difference over time.
